FAQs

Kurtz Bros. Mulch & Soils

  • Will your mulch encourage termites to live by my house?

Our mulch is unlikely to attract termites to your home. The composting process generates heat that eliminates most organisms in the mulch piles. Additionally, termites prefer dark, solid, and isolated environments, which a thin layer of mulch does not provide.
  • Are the dyes that you use in your mulch safe for plants, animals, and people?

The dyes used in our colored mulch are safe for plants, animals, and people. We use Chromascapes colorants, which have been independently tested and confirmed to be non-toxic. These colorants are water-based and use materials similar to those found in cosmetics and food containers.
  • Can I use compost as mulch?

Yes, compost can be effectively used as mulch. Our Earth Blend Leaf Compost not only retains moisture and suppresses weed growth but also provides essential macro and micro nutrients that promote healthy plant growth.
  • What's the downside to using compost?

There are no significant downsides to using compost. It benefits the environment by reducing landfill waste through recycling organic materials. Furthermore, compost improves plant health, resulting in larger, more vibrant flowers and increased vegetable yields.
  • I normally buy bagged mulch. How can I figure out how much bulk mulch to order?

Our staff would be happy to determine how much mulch to buy based on the number of mulch bags you've ordered in the past. To calculate this number yourself, start by checking how many bags you usually buy and the size of each bag. Most mulch bags are 2 cubic feet. Bulk mulch is sold by the cubic yard, and 1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet. Here’s a quick way to convert: - Multiply the number of bags by the bag size (in cubic feet) to get total cubic feet. - Divide that number by 27 to get cubic yards. Example: If you normally buy 20 bags of 2 cu. ft. mulch: 20 × 2 = 40 cu. ft. 40 ÷ 27 ≈ 1.5 cubic yards So you’d order about 1.5 cubic yards of bulk mulch.
  • How many square feet will one yard cover?

One cubic yard of mulch, when spread at a depth of 2 inches, will cover approximately 162 square feet.
