What Composts are Best for Your Garden?

Revitalize your soil with professional composts. Learn how green waste, manure blends, and nutrient-rich soil amendments create a vibrant, healthy landscape.

Choosing the right biological amendments is a critical step for any homeowner aiming to revitalize their outdoor space. High-quality soil health forms the foundation of every successful landscape, providing the essential nutrients that plants require to thrive throughout changing seasons. Professional applications offer a sophisticated way to enhance your environment. These expert solutions provide a reliable path toward achieving the lush, green results that define a well-maintained property.

According to Green Profit, 38.8% of households wanted their gardens to produce more flowers, fruits, and vegetables. Achieving this level of productivity requires a deep understanding of how different organic materials interact with local soil chemistry. By utilizing expertly curated composts, property owners can transform depleted dirt into a vibrant ecosystem that supports robust root systems and lush foliage. Focusing on the science of soil nutrition will yield the most impressive visual and structural results for any residential or commercial landscape.

          Utilizing Green Waste Mixtures

Green waste blends are primarily composed of recycled yard trimmings and grass clippings that have undergone a rigorous decomposition process. These composts are excellent for general soil conditioning because they introduce a broad spectrum of microorganisms into the earth. The high nitrogen content found in these mixtures helps accelerate the growth of leafy greens and decorative shrubs during the early spring months.

The consistency of professional green waste is usually quite fine, making it easy to incorporate into existing flower beds. Because the materials are processed at high temperatures, weed seeds and pathogens are eliminated before the product reaches the landscape. This thermal stabilization creates a reliable product that meets high-quality standards for residential applications. This results in a clean, effective amendment that improves the physical structure of the soil without introducing unwanted invasive species.

When applied as a top dressing, these materials help retain moisture and suppress the growth of weeds. The slow release of nutrients gives the plants a steady supply of energy over several months. Using high-grade green waste is a reliable method for maintaining the vitality of large-scale planting areas that require consistent nitrogen levels to remain vibrant and healthy.

          Choosing Manure-Based Blends

Manure-based products are highly valued for their intense nutrient density and ability to improve soil aeration. These composts typically feature aged animal waste that has been stabilized to prevent root burn while maximizing mineral availability. The inclusion of phosphorus and potassium makes these blends particularly effective for supporting the development of strong stems and colorful blooms.

The texture of these blends is often more fibrous than other varieties, which helps break up heavy clay soils. This structural improvement allows water to penetrate deeper into the ground, reaching the root zones of trees and large perennials more effectively. Advanced processing techniques focus on optimizing the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio for superior performance. Over time, the organic matter builds a resilient soil matrix that can better withstand periods of heavy rain or moderate drought.

Professional application of manure blends involves precise calibration to match the specific needs of the local flora. Using these concentrated sources of nutrition provides a significant boost to the overall biomass of the garden. It is a preferred choice for areas dedicated to heavy-feeding plants that demand a rich environment to reach their full genetic potential for growth and display.

          Implementing Mushroom Substrate Varieties

Mushroom substrate is a specialized byproduct of the fungi growing industry that offers a unique set of benefits for residential landscapes. These composts are renowned for their high water retention capabilities and their neutral to slightly alkaline pH levels. This makes them an ideal choice for balancing acidic soils or supporting plants that prefer a more lime-rich growing environment.

The composition of this material often includes a mix of straw, gypsum, and other organic fillers that have been pasteurized. This creates a lightweight and porous amendment that encourages beneficial fungal activity in the ground. By fostering a symbiotic relationship between fungi and plant roots, these substrates help increase the efficiency of nutrient uptake across the entire landscape.

Because mushroom mixtures are so effective at holding onto moisture, they are frequently used in areas prone to rapid drying. The slow decomposition rate of the straw components provides a long-lasting source of carbon for the soil. Integrating this specialized material into a maintenance routine helps stabilize the soil environment and provides a steady foundation for decorative perennials and ornamental grasses.

          Incorporating Nutrient-Rich Soil Blends

Nutrient-rich products are created through the biological activity of specific worm species, resulting in a highly concentrated and bioavailable amendment. These composts are often referred to as black gold because of their incredible impact on plant vigor and disease resistance. The process concentrates essential minerals and introduces beneficial enzymes that are not found in standard heat-treated organic materials.

The fine, granular texture of these castings allows for immediate integration into the soil profile. This material is particularly effective for delicate seedlings or high-value ornamental specimens that require a gentle yet potent source of nutrition. The presence of natural growth hormones in the mixture stimulates rapid root elongation and enhances the overall structural integrity of the plant.

Using these refined biological products helps create a self-sustaining cycle of health within the garden beds. The microbial diversity introduced by these nutrient-dense products helps break down other organic matter more efficiently, making the entire soil system more productive. It represents a premium approach to soil management that prioritizes the long-term biological health of the landscape over simple chemical fertilization.

          Applying Wood Fiber Amends

Wood-based amendments are specifically designed to improve the long-term carbon content of the soil and provide a stable mulch layer. These composts consist of finely ground bark and wood fibers that have been partially decomposed to ensure they do not strip nitrogen from the soil. They are essential for creating the forest-floor conditions that many woody ornamentals and shade-loving plants prefer.

The primary advantage of wood fiber is its ability to provide long-lasting structural support to the soil. As the woody particles slowly break down, they create tiny pockets of air that prevent soil compaction in high-traffic areas. This improves the overall drainage of the site and allows for better gas exchange between the atmosphere and the root systems underground.

Professional landscapes often utilize these blends to create a polished, uniform appearance across large beds. The dark color of the aged wood provides a beautiful aesthetic contrast to green foliage while serving a functional purpose. By protecting the soil surface from erosion and temperature fluctuations, wood-fiber products help maintain a consistent environment that allows plants to flourish regardless of the external weather conditions.

Investing in the health of your soil is the most effective way to allow for a thriving and beautiful landscape. By finding the appropriate organic amendments, property owners can achieve a lush and productive garden that stands the test of time. These exchanges promote resourcefulness and adaptation, encouraging gardeners to cultivate various plants that may otherwise be inaccessible or unaffordable. Ultimately, such events hone a collective appreciation for biodiversity while providing economic benefits by reducing the need for purchased plants.

When shopping at local garden centers, customers often benefit from the assurance of quality and freshness in the products they purchase. Because these centers acquire their plants, soils, and fertilizers from local suppliers, customers can directly inspect the offerings. Inspecting plants in person enables gardeners to identify any issues such as pests, diseases, or inadequate care before making a purchase. This transparency helps customers make informed decisions and ensures that they only take home the healthiest plants available.

Garden enthusiasts value consistent stock replenishments found at local garden centers, which ensure fresh products throughout the year. The centers maintain a schedule to restock seasonal plants and supplies frequently, offering something new with each visit. This ensures that gardeners can continuously access the appropriate tools and plants to adorn their spaces. With a steady rotation of stock and new selections, local customers never miss an opportunity to enhance their gardens. Many gardeners rely on these stores for trusted

Local garden centers bolster customer trust by offering guarantees and exchange policies on their products. These policies encourage buying with confidence, knowing that there is recourse if plants fail to thrive or do not meet customer expectations. Whether offering plant replacements or store credits, such policies underscore a commitment to customer satisfaction. The assurance that gardeners can rely on these centers for both high-quality products and resolution-oriented service sets them apart.

The internet’s global reach permits gardeners to explore and purchase plants commonly found in far-off places, from succulents of arid environments to the lush, rare blooms of tropical regions. As gardeners add these exotic additions to their collections, they inadvertently gain insights into global horticultural practices. Online platforms often accompany plant descriptions with detailed care instructions and tutorials, empowering gardeners with the knowledge to maintain diverse gardens successfully. You have now secured your yard for the harsh winter months. That means now is the time to reflect on your lawn and garden successes from the past year and to focus on what improvements can be made moving forward!

Grab yourself a cup of hot tea or cocoa, and begin with some self-reflection.

What questions should I ask myself when planning next year’s yard?

As you think about your lawn and garden for next year, first take some time to determine the pros and cons of last year.

                  Ask yourself:

      What really worked?

      What did I like?

      What didn’t work?

What was really challenging for me?

What would I like to do differently?

Jot down some of these answers, and make that list the first step in planning for a new and improved yard for the year ahead.

How should I plan for next year?

Once you determine some personal preferences for your lawn and garden, you can really begin the planning process for next year. It is a great time to start making these preparations because your yard does not require as much of your attention right now!

  Maintenance

The first step in planning for next year involves a little maintenance. Did the brisk winter wind destroy any aspects of your yard, garden, or lawn? Maybe your furniture, fence, or decorations have seen better days due to the effects of winter. If you notice any areas of your lawn that look a little ravaged or disheveled, take the time to fix those issues early on. Pick a dry day to tackle some of those maintenance issues. Repair anything that looks broken, secure pieces of furniture or decor that have been dismantled by the harsh weather, clear out any fallen debris in your yard, and treat any other areas that need a little TLC.

  Waste Removal & Pruning

As the cold weather starts to slow down, you may want to begin with some waste removal and pruning. Oftentimes, gardeners like to begin the waste removal process with a good power wash of any paths or sidewalks. This will remove any unwanted growths, such as algae, and keep your pathways clear, clean, and fresh.

It is also the perfect time to clean tools and old pots. Wash seed trays, empty out stored bags of compost, and remove any lingering soil, bugs, decaying plants, etc. from last year’s garden. A fresh, clean start as the spring weather sets in will allow this year’s garden to flourish from the beginning.

Pruning is also an excellent way to jump-start next year’s yard before the spring officially arrives. During the winter, plants are dormant. This creates the perfect opportunity to remove ugly, old, or decaying branches from your trees and bushes to allow for a fresher and better variety of fruits, veggies, and flowers. Just remember, some plants bloom on “old wood” and if you prune them now you may not get any blooms this spring or summer. Make sure you research your plant before pruning.

  Ordering Seed

Besides some general maintenance and chores, planning for next year’s lawn and garden also requires… well… planning! The winter season is the perfect time to sit down and map out what plants you would like to have in your garden, where you would like them planted, and when the best time for planting would be.

You should do a little research, and try out some new plants this year! Take a look at your local stores and nurseries and be sure to check out some online catalogs for ideas, too. Do you have some fruits, veggies, or flowers in mind for your garden this year, but you aren’t quite sure where to start? Early Sowing

Believe it or not, some plants and crops allow for sowing to begin before the spring weather officially sets in! When you map out what plants you would like to see in your garden this year, you may notice that some allow for early sowing, while others need to hold off for warmer weather.

If you choose any crops that require “chitting,” or giving plants a head start on sprouting, you can get started with this process early on. Potatoes, for instance, grow best with this technique. If you allow these plants to get the head start they need by placing the seeds in an egg box, in a warm location, or in a greenhouse for a harvest, you can really look forward to their growth throughout the year.

Winter yard maintenance is necessary and prudent for a healthy spring season for your yard and garden.

When you see piles of snow forming on your plants, it would be beneficial to throw on some gloves and brush snow off of branches, leaves, and bushes. Heavy snow buildup can cause your plants to bow or break.

It is not too late to add protective layering over your delicate plants. Bamboo, burlap sheets, horticultural fleece, or even bubble wrap work well to cover your plants and protect them from freezing temperatures and intense snowstorms.

On days that are cold but clear of snow, take a look at your plants and grass. If any spots seem damaged from winter weather conditions, consider cutting them back slightly. A fresh cut can give their roots the rejuvenation they need.

Believe it or not – the winter months can be the perfect time for new plantings! Some fruits, vegetables, herbs, and shrubs need to be planted around this time, including shallots, bell peppers, oregano, thyme, and rosemary. The herbs should be planted and kept indoors until spring transplanting. Giving you the perfect project for winter months!

  Landscaping

Take a walk around your landscape this winter and see if any garden beds, trees, outdoor furniture, decks, patios, or fences need a little sprucing. Staying on top of these areas of your landscape is essential because you can prevent further damage from happening by fixing any problems that may occur as they come.

While it may be too chilly outside on some days, there are certainly plenty of winter days in Ohio that are bearable for a bit of winter yard maintenance.

Here are some things you can do to keep your landscape in its best condition:

Check for dead or dying trees and branches. Cut them down and recycle/shred the materials to be used for mulch and compost.

Invest in large tarps to cover any outdoor furniture, including grills, couches, chairs, swings, and tables.

Clean off covered patio furniture from snow and ice buildup when necessary.

Repair broken furniture pieces or fences.

If you own a greenhouse, keep glass windows clean to allow for more sunlight.

There are some supplies you can grab now from your local gardening or home goods store to keep you well-prepared once spring arrives.

Slow-release fertilizers are excellent options for your plants and gardens during the winter months. With colder temps and the lack of sunlight that comes with winter, these fertilizers allow your plants to continue to receive nutrients, which is imperative for their strength and growth come spring. Fertilizer prices have been increasing a bit, so it would be a good idea to keep an eye on sales and buy before you need it!

Something to keep in mind for future years: adding a layer of mulch or compost to garden beds before everything freezes can keep them hydrated and better protected from harsh conditions too. Check out our selection of

If you haven’t already, it would be wise to invest in some supplies to protect your furniture and delicate plants. Consider purchasing large tarps for furniture and protective layers to cover your plants and keep them safe.

  Wildlife

You can also continue to take care of wildlife as the weather gets cold! When winter hits, it can be difficult for animals to find water and food. You can keep your wildlife sanctuaries up and running by continuing to supply food and clean water in your birdhouses, ponds, and birdbaths. Occasionally pouring hot water into the baths will help keep it from freezing over. You can also keep a tennis ball in your bath to keep an open hole for animals to access water.

Providing shelter is another option to take care of wildlife during the winter months. You can leave a small pile of leaves and sticks in a corner near a fence or alongside your house for insects and frogs to keep warm. Additionally, if you have low shrubbery, you can help animals create a winter habitat by purposefully placing a pile of leaves/sticks next to the shrubs. Animals can then nestle underneath to keep themselves protected from the cold.

Wishing you well in your maintenance efforts. It will be spring in Ohio before we know it!

While rock salt is a safe solution for icy walking surfaces, it can have negative impacts on your property that you work so hard to keep in good condition. Find out more about how to be mindful of the damage caused by salt on your driveway, lawn, and landscaping as well as how to minimize the negative consequences of using it.

How does rock salt affect my driveway, lawn, and landscaping?

Rock salt is a type of sodium chloride that is predominantly used during winter months to melt snow and ice off of roads, driveways, sidewalks, etc. Sure, it serves a great purpose, but it can also cause significant harm, especially to driveways, lawns, and landscaping.

  Driveways

Driveways are typically made of concrete or asphalt – both of which can be negatively affected by corrosive rock salts.

Concrete and asphalt are porous materials. When water gets absorbed into one of these materials, it can easily get trapped inside. Trapped water can then freeze and expand, which will lead to cracking and chipping. Rock salt will accelerate that freezing/thawing cycle, inevitably resulting in more significant cracking and damage to your driveway.

  Lawn

When rock salts begin to sink into your lawns, that is when the danger begins. Rock salts will kill the roots of a plant and destroy patches of your grass once the salts dissolve into the soil.

  Landscaping

Rock salt can also be damaging to your landscapes and plants. When a heavy snowstorm hits, your piles of shoveled snow will sit on your lawn, landscaped areas, flowerbeds, etc. The salt build up from those piles will start to suffocate your plants. You certainly don’t want to find dead or dying plants when spring arrives, but that could happen if your plants are trapped under giant piles of snow and ice.

How can I minimize these impacts?

There are several ways you can reduce the damage from rock salt during the winter months. Protect your driveways, lawns, and landscapes by trying one or more of the following suggestions this season:

      Use an alternative solution

Calcium chloride and magnesium chloride are great substitutions for rock salt. They are not quite as harsh, but they produce similar results.

Another alternative is an Ice Melt mix, which is a combination of sodium, calcium, and magnesium chloride pellets. Since this mix only contains a small portion of rock salt, it is not quite as harmful, but it still melts ice quickly.

      Change up your shoveling routine

Shoveling MORE snow will reduce the need to use as much rock salt solution in general. Consider shoveling your driveways and pathways more consistently throughout the season.

Sorting your snow piles into various locations is also a smart move. Piling snow in different places will reduce the amount of rock salt buildup in one location.

Plastic snow shovels will also cause less damage than metal ones!

      Look into protection options

If your driveway contains numerous or significant cracks, you may want to look into sealing your driveway to protect it from further damage.

Stock up on Gypsum! Gypsum is a solution that improves water infiltration in soil. This product will help move salt away from the roots of your grass and plants, reduce erosion, and improve the ability for soil to drain so that it won’t become clogged.

You can also consider installing a heating system below your driveway to reduce the need of rock salts and shoveling altogether. This may be a good option if you are planning on installing an entirely new driveway in your future.

Water your driveways, lawns, and landscape areas when spring arrives

When the warm weather hits, be sure to give your driveway a thorough watering to remove as much of the lingering rock salt as you can. Do the same for your lawn and your affected landscape areas.

Amidst the stress of the pandemic, our jobs, and the challenges within our society, let’s talk about something we can all agree on – Christmas! There’s nothing like sitting on your couch with your favorite holiday beverage and admiring your Christmas decor. Between the quality time with family, the beautifully trimmed tree, the twinkling lights, and the little traditional trinkets you look forward to seeing each season, it truly is the most wonderful time of the year.

But did you know that there are several eco-friendly options you can implement into your Christmas decor this year? If you haven’t started decorating for Christmas and you feel personally connected to positively impacting the environment, consider adding an eco-friendly tree into your home this year! Let us tell you more about some options.

What are the different options for Christmas Trees?

Who says a Christmas tree has to be traditional? The beauty of a Christmas tree is that it can come in a multitude of sizes, colors, shapes, and styles. Millions of people have a Christmas tree in their homes during the holidays, and it is so exciting to see different styles and cultures represented.

This year, there are lots of exciting varieties of Christmas trees that are not only unique and fun but also eco-friendly.

Here are some of our favorites:

      Real/Live Christmas Tree

If you love the look of a traditional tree by your fireplace, you can’t go wrong with taking a trip to a local tree farm for a fresh tree.

      Artificial Tree

Artificial trees can be found in almost every color and size these days! You can always find an artificial tree from a local thrift store or save some cash with a hand-me-down from a family member or neighbor!

      “Rent a Tree”

An exciting trend going around is the option to “rent” a Christmas tree. Some local tree farms will allow you to rent the tree for a few months and then return it to be replanted.

      Ladder Tree

If you’re in the mood for something different this year, ladder trees are all the rage. You’ll need an open wooden ladder, some wooden planks to lay across the steps, and then any decor that meets your fancy! Get creative with the decorations!

      Bottle Tree

Do you love relaxing with a cocktail after a long day of work? Start saving your bottles and build them into a tree. You can easily add some string lights into the bottles for an extra glow. When the season is over, you can feel good about recycling the bottles or reusing them next year!

      Driftwood Tree

Natural looking trees – without all the lights and ornaments – have become an admired style recently. This tree is especially ideal for someone with an artful eye and a crafty hand. Collect pieces of driftwood (or any branches you can find), and work your magic at building a simple but elegant tree by stacking branches vertically – starting with the longer pieces at the bottom and ending with shorter sticks on the top.

      Wall Art Tree

Do you have some open wall space in your home? If so, placing pieces of art in the shape of a tree directly on the wall can be a great option to spruce up your home and still have a holiday feel. From magnets, pieces of jewelry, and sentimental trinkets to various ornaments, small paintings, and some garland, the options are endless with a wall art tree.

There are so many trendy crafts out there that can be created with wine corks, including building a small Christmas tree! Simply place and hot glue wine corks in a circular shape for the bottom level of the tree and repeat the steps with smaller circles as you move up to the top. This choice is so cute and festive!

If you’re an avid reader and you wonder how to make great use of some of your older novels, you may have found the perfect option. Relive the stories and characters within your favorite novels by arranging your favorite books into the shape of a christmas tree, starting at the bottom and working your way up. You can even add string lights around the books after it is built to bring out an even cozier vibe.

With all of these new, innovative ideas for Christmas trees, we have to ask ourselves, which ones are the most eco-friendly? While Christmas is just one time of the year, it is an important season to reflect on our choices and how we can give to others, including the environment.

states that, in 2020, 75% of Christmas trees in homes were artificial. That begs the question, are artificial trees more eco-friendly than real trees? You’d be surprised at the debate surrounding this question. Many people think that reusing artificial trees is the more sustainable option to save from cutting down so many real trees, while others argue that real trees provide far more nutrients to the environment and they decompose naturally. So, what is true?

Real trees would be considered the next best option followed by some of the unique ones listed above, such as book tree, bottle tree, driftwood tree, and wine cork tree, which can all be recycled or reused. Artificial trees would be the least eco-friendly of all the ones mentioned.

Additionally, traces of lead can be found in PVC and/or the paint used on a fake tree – none of which you want around your children or grandchildren.

Just be sure to use it for as many years as you can. If you feel the need to upgrade your tree, consider gifting your artificial tree to someone else rather than throwing it out or recycling it.

Live trees, on the other hand, are by far the most eco-friendly trees for the Christmas season. So, what’s the difference between a live and a real tree?

Live trees can be purchased from your local tree farm with the root ball still attached. The remaining root will allow the tree to be replanted at the conclusion of the holiday season, continuing to provide nutrients and oxygen to the environment. Perfect!

If you are unable to obtain a live tree, you also can’t go wrong with a real tree from one of your local farms. Many people argue that cutting down a Christmas tree is harmful to the environment, but in fact, a few new trees (usually 4-5) are planted for each one that is cut. In addition, during the duration of the tree’s life as it grows to an adequate height for selling, the tree provides the environment with wonderful nutrients and it gives a home for birds and other wildlife.

How can I purchase these options?

There are a number of locally-based locations where you can purchase the perfect, eco-friendly Christmas tree. Shopping locally is our recommended option! You’re not only supporting your local Columbus neighbors, but you’re also cutting back on carbon emissions from a longer drive. Don’t wait too long though! Trees will sell out very quickly this year as a result of COVID restrictions. It is advised to check these local tree farms’ websites or Facebook pages before making the trip just to ensure they are still selling products.

An essential task during the fall (along with sipping on your favorite seasonal beverage) is to plant and prune your trees and shrubs correctly. For healthier, more beautiful landscaping next year, here’s some suggestions for what you should tackle this autumn season.

How Do I Care For My Trees and Shrubs in the Fall?

With a change in temperatures, you can certainly expect a change in tree and shrub maintenance as well. In fact, this season is an ideal time to prepare your landscape for harsh winter months and create an optimal rebirthing season in the spring.

  Watering

It’s important that a plant receives adequate water especially for the first year after it’s planted. Fortunately, fall in Ohio generally brings rainy and cool weather, and that should provide enough moisture for your new plants. If we do experience a warmer and drier fall than normal, you may need to supplement with extra watering. Just make sure not to oversaturate the ground around the plant.

  Trimming & Shaping

Trimming trees is an essential and beneficial part of fall yard work. However, it’s important to know what kind of plant you have before trimming. Some plants, especially certain types of hydrangeas, bloom on “old wood”. If you cut the old stems on these plants you will have limited or no blooms the next year. You can research the type of plant you have online to see if it blooms on old or new wood. If you’re unsure, don’t trim at all and check next spring to see if the blooms grow on “old wood” or “new wood”. Be sure to prune any dead or diseased branches and twigs from trees and shrubs early in the fall season. Heavy winds could cause these broken and unhealthy pieces to break and fall, which is unsafe for you and your home.

Trimming also helps with influencing the shape and health of your trees and shrubs in the future. Following the proper trimming techniques will provide unique and aesthetic shaping to your plants, allowing your plants to look better in the coming seasons, and producing more beautiful flowers and luscious fruit over time.

  Mulching

The fall season is the best time for mulching because fresh mulch protects your soil and helps slow the process of freezing and thawing that occurs during winter. Plus, you surely don’t want to mulch after the ground freezes!

At Kurtz Bros., we offer a variety of top-of-the-line mulches that will be nutritious and beneficial for your plants this fall. After purchasing the type of mulch that best suits your needs, you will need to place 1-2 inches of mulch around your shrubbery and tree trunks. This same process should be done each fall.

Keep the mulch an inch or so away from the roots and tree trunks to avoid rotting. It is acceptable for mulch to be placed on top of fallen leaves as they can be a supplemental fertilizer for your plants!

  Cleaning

Unfortunately, we all know that fall requires lots of clean-ups. As leaves fall rapidly during this season, keeping up with cleaning the yard can be daunting, but it is definitely a necessary step.

Raking leaves to keep your yard clear is important in keeping grass healthy and avoiding any mold from rain or snow. Raking leaves onto a plastic tarp can make for easier cleanup and investing in a leaf blower might be helpful if you live in an area with numerous trees.

Fallen leaves and branches can also gather in gutters. Be sure to thoroughly clear out your gutters throughout the fall season to avoid clogs and backups.

You also want to remove any leaves or branches from shrubs and plant beds. Keep these as clear as possible as you prepare for the cold winter months. You don’t want your plants to develop any diseases due to mold or excessive leaf build-up.

  Protecting

Another optional practice for fall yard work is the need to protect some of your trees and shrubs. While this step is often overlooked, it can certainly be critical in some cases.

Tree wrapping is one practice. You can purchase a tree wrap, which is a long, thin piece of material meant to be wrapped around the trunk of your tree to protect against the hazards of winter. This is an especially good option for young, thin-bark trees. This wrap should be kept around your tree from mid-end of November to mid-March.

Protecting your trees and shrubs from critters is also a wise practice. If a variety of wintery rodents frequent your yard, consider adding a barrier a few feet away from the trunk or root of your plants. You can create these barriers from mesh, tree wrap material, or chicken wire. Be sure to remove these barriers come early spring.

Finally, protecting evergreens and delicate shrubbery from bitter winds and temperatures is another optional yet effective practice. Burlap screenings are ideal for this type of protection.

What is Best Planted in the Fall?

A common misconception is that spring is always the best time for new plantings. Surprisingly, the fall season can actually be a perfect time! While some plants are better for spring planting, there are certainly a number of trees and shrubs that thrive best when planted in early fall. Evergreens, for instance, should be planted in the fall – after the extreme heat of summer and before the frozen ground of winter.

Trees and shrubs planted during this time of year allow strong roots to form. These strong roots will gain strength in the cool, moist soil during the dormant winter and be ready to bloom beautifully when warm spring weather arrives.

As temperatures begin to drop and football season begins, that can only mean one thing – fall is approaching! There is no better season in Ohio than the fall. The leaves begin to change color and the weather is perfect for enjoying warm coffee and toasty campfires. However, it can also be a bit of a hassle to manage all of the fallen leaves throughout the season. Let us provide some insight about what to do with all of the leaves in your yard.

What should I do with the leaves when they fall?

Sure, watching the leaves in your yard change color and fall to the ground is one of the most beautiful parts of this season! But it is also overwhelming to keep up with the constant raking and bagging of the leaves, which also begs the question, what should you do with all those leaves?

At Kurtz Bros., we have the perfect solution for you – compost! We are proud to offer a yard waste recycling program that can turn your fallen leaves into a beneficial and environmentally-friendly product.

How do I bring in yard waste?

We take a great deal of pride in our yard waste recycling program. It has been our mission for more than 20 years to promote and develop green alternatives to landfilling.

In order to take advantage of this program, the first thing you have to do is bag up your yard waste in paper lawn bags. This includes fallen leaves, twigs and branches, grass clippings, and mulch. If the bags are not recyclable paper yard waste bags, then you will need to empty them and take the bags with you. If they are paper recyclable bags (without plastic liner), you can leave the bags. However, our yard inspector may still ask you to empty them to check the contents. Since the yard waste and leaves you bring in will be used to make mulch and compost, we are very strict about keeping forbidden items out of our compost stream.

Next, choose one of our convenient locations for the drop-off. Keep in mind – we invite all Franklin County residents to drop off their yard trimmings at no charge! For logs larger than 8 feet in length or 19 inches in diameter, they can only be dropped off at the Frank Rd location for a fee of $45 per ton.

In the fall, we will ask our customers to dump their leaves in a separate pile from our general yard waste. These leaves will be ground, composted, and screened to make leaf compost. The leaf compost is sold in bags and bulk, and it is also used in our Custom Hardwood mulch and soil blends.

  What is compost?

Compost is a collection of natural ingredients, such as organic materials and plant waste, that are recycled and then can be used to fertilize your lawn and garden. This mixture is incredibly valuable to your soil because it provides rich nutrients in an inexpensive and environmentally friendly way.

Kurtz Bros. offers several types of compost that can all add vital nutrients to your landscape. Our featured composts include earth blend leaf compost, com-til, and sweet peet.

Why should I use compost in my garden & landscape? What are the benefits?

Composting is a beneficial option for your personal landscape as well as the environment in general. When fallen leaves, lawn trimmings, and vegetable waste are recycled, these materials turn into a very nutritious material that can benefit your soil. Additionally, these materials are kept out of landfills. The more we can reuse organic materials and keep them out of hazardous landfills, the better!

Another benefit of using compost in your landscape is its versatility. Compost can be stored easily and used throughout the entire year, and also, it can enhance many areas of your lawn and garden.

How should I use compost in my garden & landscape?

Again, the versatility of compost is one of its greatest features. Some of the most common uses for compost include:

Mulch – Compost used as mulch can be added to your plants, bushes, and trees to help hold moisture and add nutrients. Just like with typical mulch, add 2 inches of compost mulch to your landscape for a healthy and beautiful-looking yard.

Soil Enhancement – Compost that is incorporated into soil is extremely effective. Mixing compost with your potting soil provides supplemental nutrients to your plants, allowing them to thrive even more.

Compost tea – Just like you would brew black or green tea, you can go through the same process with compost, too! Compost tea is the liquid that can be released from compost, which can be poured over flowers, plants, and shrubbery to provide additional benefits.

Lawn enhancement – Adding a layer of compost to your lawn can provide a level of moisture that is great for grass. Your grass will have a nice green, healthy look if you let a few inches of compost settle into your lawn.

The best time to begin incorporating compost into your lawn and garden is now! As the fall season officially sets in, keep in mind that this is the ideal time to enrich your landscape by adding compost to your plants, lawn, and soil. Kurtz Bros. is proud to offer a variety of landscape aggregates, specifically various types of limestone, gravel, and sand. But what exactly is the difference between these types, and how will you know when to use each variety? Let us give you a breakdown of each of these aggregates to make your decision a little easier when it is time for a new project in your yard!

What are aggregates? What are the different kinds?

Aggregates are small materials that are used to enhance landscaping. These products can add unique textures and colors to your landscape as well as volume and stability, which can really enhance the overall aesthetics of your yard.

KB offers a selection of limestone, gravel, and sand. Let’s first take a look at each type of aggregate we offer.

Note: aggregate color can vary based on the vein of stone they are mining from.

  Limestone

When determining which type of limestone to purchase, consider sizing and color. Our limestone collection features a variety of sizes and colors, which gives you great options to choose from. Check out the chart below to compare our selection.

  Gravel

We sell three different types of gravel that all vary in size. They are all sold by the ton. Check out what we offer in the chart below.

  Sand

We offer two types of sand, differing in both texture and color.

What is the best way to use each kind of aggregate?

While the aggregates of limestone, gravel, and sand have some similarities, there are also very important differences to distinguish. If you have specific projects in mind, you’ll need to know exactly which type of aggregate is best for your landscape projects. We are here to help make those distinctions!

  Limestone vs. Gravel

First, what is the difference between limestone and gravel? Limestone and gravel are both versatile materials used for a variety of purposes.

Primarily, they are both used for “hardscaping,” which means the materials used in the structure of a landscape. They are similar in that they are both implemented as components for cement, both porous for drainage improvement, and both used as fillers of uneven areas. However, they are mainly different in their appearances. Limestone tends to only be available in shades of gray and white. Gravel, on the other hand, contains a greater variation of stones, pebbles, and rocks, which can provide a more complex color scheme.

Limestone is generally used more in “construction” based projects such as patio installations, base for poured concrete and driveways. Gravel is generally used in drainage or decorative applications. Sand is generally used as a final base for pavers or pool liners since it can be easily moved to create a level surface.

Additionally, limestone is just one specific type of rock. It is a sedimentary rock, which has a bulkier, more asperous look. In contrast, gravel contains a variety of rocks and stones. The appearance of gravel is much smoother and often smaller as a result of being worn down by water. Limestone is typically one of the rock types that can be included in gravel.

With many similarities, these landscape aggregates can be used in so many ways. Depending on the specific needs of your project, you’ll want to focus on cost, availability, and appearance when determining which material to use!

  Limestone & Gravel vs. Sand

The biggest similarity between limestone, gravel, and sand is that they make up the major components of concrete. Otherwise, they are very different. While limestone and gravel contains varying shapes and sizes of rocks, sand is very different with a loose granular material.

Sand is best utilized in landscape projects that require fillers, leveling, and aiding in construction. It can fill spaces between pavers and other building materials that will prevent shifts and cracks. Since sand primarily varies in color and texture, depending on your specific project, you’ll simply need to determine if you want sand with a more fine or coarse texture. Keep in mind that the coarse concrete sand is better for walkways and edging, while the fine-textured mason sand is excellent as a filler for laying bricks and stones and in the creation of mortar.

is the easiest way to place an order. For larger orders, however, it may be better to give us a call with your specific needs. As these larger orders can become more complex, keep in mind that it is our job to help make this process as convenient for you as possible. For example, oftentimes, having two single-axle deliveries is less expensive than one six-axle delivery. Since we are only able to deliver one material per delivery (unless there is a specific request to mix materials), we can definitely help you figure out the most efficient delivery options when you are ordering these large amounts of material.

After placing an order, one of our friendly customer service representatives will give you a call to verify your order, including your address, the material itself, the quantity, and any specific dump instructions. It is important to be prepared for this call so that we can confirm everything and avoid delaying a delivery. Additionally, if you are not able to be home to accept the delivery, clearly marking the desired dump area is required. Sidewalk chalk is a great option for this!

Why would I decide to do bulk delivery over managing on my own?

Plain and simple – bulk delivery is definitely the least expensive option when ordering large amounts of mulch, stones, compost, soil, etc. for your yard. And of course, at KB, we believe our flexible and efficient delivery services provide excellent service as well as customer convenience.

What should I expect with bulk delivery?

We can typically get a delivery out within 24 hours, and we have various trucks and services to best meet your needs.

Our delivery policy is as follows:

“Any truck making a typical delivery will drop material on the driveway or any paved path or road. Our trucks are not capable of driving off a paved road onto lawns or into backyards. Additionally, our trucks will need to have vertical clearance free from trees, power lines, basketball hoops, etc. when dumping the material.”

Depending on the size of your order, the pile of material will likely take up most of the width of your driveway. We always advise our customers to remove cars from the garage to avoid getting stuck behind your new material. We also advise our customers to lay down a large piece of tarp, if possible, to avoid any stains on your drive and to ensure an easier cleanup. While you do not need to be home to accept a delivery, just be sure to clearly mark the area in which you would like the delivery to be made.

Additionally, keep in mind that if rain is expected or if the product will remain on your driveway for several days, it’s a good idea to have another tarp to cover the material, keeping it drier and easier to work with once you are ready.

What should I expect from the delivery driver? What can and can’t they do?

Once you have prepped your driveway for the delivery, what should you expect next? While expectations may vary a bit depending on the size of your order, here’s what you can generally await:

Here are some other general expectations to consider, depending on the size of your order:

        Single-Axle Dump Truck

Most delivery drivers will arrive on single-axle dump trucks. These trucks are typically used for smaller orders in residential neighborhoods, hauling 1-10 yards of mulch/compost or 1-9 yards of soil/tons of aggregates

These trucks require a minimum of 9 feet in width and 11 feet in height to access the property. When the truck bed is raised to dump the material, there must be at least 16-18 feet without obstructions (branches, phone or electric wires, awnings, etc.)

Additionally, the truck will need to stay on paved and level surfaces, such as a driveway or street, and they are not able to “tailgate” or spread the material as they move forward

Advice on using my bulk supplies?

We think you are making the right choice by choosing to have your material delivered in bulk! Ordering in bulk is almost always less expensive than bags, and the order/delivery process is so simple.

All you’ll really need to worry about after placing an order with us is having the proper tools to move the material after delivery. You’ll definitely want to invest in a shovel, pitchfork, wheelbarrow, rake, and broom. These tools will be a true investment because you will get continued use out of them each year.

Our last piece of advice is to place the order and schedule the delivery when you are truly ready for the material. We advise our customers not to order too far in advance because the bulk material will take up quite a bit of room in the middle of your drive. You certainly don’t want to worry about maneuvering around your mulch or constantly worrying about covering it up in case of bad weather. Plan on having the materials delivered when you are ready to use them! If you’d like to learn a little more about our delivery service and what we offer, check out our

Just when we were all feeling the relief of making it through 2020 and COVID-19, here come the Brood X cicadas! After spending 17 years underground, the cicada swarms have finally emerged, and they are causing some anxiety about how to handle them if they invade your yard. Let us provide some insight on what to do if you are “lucky” enough to have them in your area.

  Has Brood X emerged?

Ohio is one of the states in which cicadas are emerging, especially in the warmer counties of Columbus. According to the Columbus Dispatch, swarms are beginning to pop up in various areas. While they have not all arrived yet, the number of emerging cicadas will continue to grow as temperatures rise. You may have even heard some buzzing cicadas during the Memorial Golf Tournament in Dublin, Ohio!

How will I know if they are in my area?

While the question of whether or not you will be affected by the cicadas still exists as we wait for the rest of them to emerge, you will definitely know it if they choose to come to your area! According to Michael J. Raupp, an entomology professor at the University of Maryland, these insects are incredibly loud, emitting sounds with a similar decibel to lawn mowers or even low-flying airplanes.

During the cicada season, they will spend their time searching for a mate. The reason for the loud buzzing is to assist with their mating rituals. Besides the loud noises, there will also be no question as to whether they have arrived in your area due to the large amount of insects. If you are affected, substantial swarms will be present, and you won’t miss them!

If I am affected, what precautions should I take?

While they may be a real nuisance, cicadas are not actually harmful! They will generally leave humans, animals, and most landscaping alone. However, there are some tips for how to protect yourself and your yard from these insects if they do invade your space.

  Lawn Care

The reason for the loud buzzing of the cicadas is to attract a mate. Therefore, you’ll definitely want to avoid loud noises in your yard while they are out on the hunt! You wouldn’t want them to mistake you for a potential mate!

The cicadas are less active during the early morning and at dawn. It would be best to maintain your lawn during those cooler hours. Try to temporarily adjust your usual lawn care routine by cutting your grass, trimming your hedges, and using your leaf blower in the early morning or late evening.

If you are still being bothered by swarming cicadas while you are caring for your yard, consider some protection for your eyes and face. Protective glasses and/or a mesh face covering could help keep these insects away from you while you are working outside.

  Protect Your Plants

The Brood X cicadas are generally harmless, but they may still make a mess of things. According to an article by USA TODAY, “The main concern for your yard is when the insects begin to lay their eggs up in the trees. While more mature trees can handle this, the smaller, weaker, or younger trees may experience some damage as eggs stay put until they eventually hatch approximately four to six weeks later.”

In order to keep your trees, bushes, and other plants safe, it is recommended to purchase a garden net or barrier of some kind. Be sure to keep the net secure to best protect your plants from cicada eggs and invasion.

  Avoid New Plantings & Pesticides

Due to the extreme number of emerging cicadas, experts suggest waiting until early fall to plant any new trees, bushes, flowers, etc. to ensure protecting your landscaping from lingering cicada eggs or any other damage.

Additionally, you may be tempted to use various chemicals and pesticides to speed up the process of eliminating these insects. However, with the overwhelming number of cicadas, using a pesticide is not necessarily an ideal option. You may either have a ton of dead cicadas to clean up in your yard or you will find that all that time, effort, and money you put into the pesticides won’t actually get rid of all of them anyway.

Keep reassuring yourself that this season is temporary, and they won’t be around for too long!

How long will the cicadas be here?

It may feel like forever while the cicadas are invading your yard and driving you crazy… but remember that this invasion will end! The lifespan of a cicada ranges between 4-6 weeks. Most of the cicadas should be out of sight (and sound) by the end of July.

What do I do after they leave?

By the end of July, we should all finally have some freedom from the cicada invasion! But how do you maintain a beautiful and healthy landscape when they are finally gone?

You have a few tasks to complete for proper post-cicada cleanup:

  Quick Cleanup

Remove the unsightly appearance of dead cicadas in your yard by grabbing a broom and dust pan (or even a snow shovel) and clear your yard as frequently and quickly as you can. It is said that dead cicadas can radiate an unpleasant smell, so keep an eye on your yard throughout July as their season ends and begin cleaning up! You can either bury the cicada bodies in a deep hole in your backyard to repress an odor, put the cicadas in your compost, or keep them in a trash bag outside until trash night.

Clean Gutters, Pools, and Hot Tubs

Your yard and gardens are not the only areas that’ll need to be cleaned up once the cicadas are out of the picture. Be sure to take some time to clean out your gutters with a gutter scoop and bucket. You certainly don’t want any clogs because any backup can cause damage to your home and foundation.

You’ll also want to remove any remaining carcasses from pools, hot tubs, fountains, etc. Grab your pool skimmer or a small nylon pool brush, and clean off the surfaces of any water features.

  Let Cicadas Decompose

Letting your cicada carcasses decompose in your yard might sound like a strange idea, but there are some benefits! As these insects decompose, they release sources of nitrogen. Nitrogen can be an incredibly beneficial nutrient for your grass, soil, plants, flowers, etc.

New inspiration for yard and garden care is all around us. Whether you see some ideas on HGTV, Pinterest, or your local nursery, you may be realizing that your own space could use a bit of an update. Aggregates may be the perfect option for you!

Aggregates are small materials that are used to enhance landscaping, often including sand, gravel, limestones, and loam. These products can add unique textures and colors to your landscape as well as volume and stability, which can really enhance the overall aesthetics of your yard. Are you interested in learning more about how these materials can be utilized in your own space? Read on!

If you are thinking about an aggregate update to your landscaping, keep in mind that there are multiple benefits that come with this decision. Some of the prominent advantages of using aggregates include:

an update can deter a person away from going through with it at all! Luckily, there is very little prep work that comes with an aggregate update. All you need to do to prepare is dig out about five centimeters of dirt to create a space for the materials. Additionally, you can lay down a fabric weed barrier prior to laying the aggregates to prevent unwanted growth.

As soon as the aggregates have been laid out, there is not much to do to maintain beauty and functionality! The very limited up-keep of these materials is definitely one of its greatest benefits. All you’ll have to do is occasionally pull a few weeds that may pop through the decorative rock, but that is pretty much it!

At various prices per ton, these materials are not overly expensive. But more importantly, due to the stability of aggregate materials, you will not be responsible for yearly updates, which can save you quite a bit of money in the long run.

Another great advantage of aggregates is their versatility. With the various types, colors, shapes, patterns, and textures of these materials, you are sure to find the perfect fit for your specific landscaping needs.

A yard full of lush green grass can be an absolutely beautiful enhancement to your landscape. However, if you struggle to manage all the upkeep that comes with cutting and watering, if you suffer from severe allergies, or if you live in a location with extreme temperatures or drought, maybe an aggregate replacement would be perfect for you. Because of the limited upkeep that comes with landscaping rocks and gravel, making the switch may not only alleviate your stress but also serve as an excellent option for conserving water. Aggregates do not need to be watered consistently like many types of grass, florals, and other plants. These materials are viable in all types of weather, including intense heat, bitter cold, or extremely wet or dry conditions.

After learning about some of the benefits of aggregates for landscaping, you might be wondering which type would best suit your space. There are several types of aggregates to choose from, including:

The combination of gravel and various stones can brighten up your landscape with new colors. You can also choose between smaller or larger stones*, depending on which area of your yard you are updating. Smaller pieces would be perfect for adding a little texture around the garden beds, while larger stones* would be perfect for paths and walkways.

The combination of sand and clay is called loam, which is an excellent type of aggregate to improve draining issues in your landscape or to help retain water for more hydrated plants.

Sand aggregates come in a variety of colors, ranging from lighter earth tones to deeper, fuller shades. Sand is a great option for restoring surfaces, filling areas, or creating a safe play place for children.

How do I choose what aggregates to use?

When determining which type of aggregate is right for you, you first need to determine the need of your landscape. What type of project are you thinking of completing? The type of update you are considering will determine which aggregate is best to use.

The various colors, patterns, textures, and sizes of the aggregate materials allow for infinite combinations and designs. Consider the following landscaping trends when making the choice for which aggregate to use:
